Carbondale elementary students to take time out to stand up to childhood obesity

Some Carbondale elementary school students will take a time out to stand up against childhood obesity.

Kids from Thomas Elementary School will lead a cheer at Tuesday's Saluki Women's Basketball game focusing on the prevention of childhood obesity.

Dr. J. Ailinani says the children will wear their yellow childhood obesity prevention T-shirts while cheering the winning combination known as 5-2-1-0 to prevent children from becoming obese.

Dr. Ailinani says the 5-2-1-0 plan is a guideline to help parents instill healthy habits early in life.

According to Dr. Ailinani five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, two hours or less of TV or video game time, plus at least one hour of physical activity and zero sugary drinks or snacks is the recipe for preventing childhood obesity.

Ailinani says sugar is the number one cause of obesity. When a child becomes obese, Dr. Ailinani says it can lead to many adult diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, sleep apnea, arthritis and even cancer.

The Thomas Elementary students will perform their cheer during a time out at the Dec. 16 Saluki Women's Basketball game. Tip off is at 12:05 p.m.
