How do shipping prices compare closer to Christmas?

The longer you wait to ship your Christmas presents, the more you'll have to pay. The longer you wait to ship your Christmas presents, the more you'll have to pay.

Monday marked the busiest mailing day of the year for the United States Postal Service and FedEx.

Both expected to process millions and millions of packages.

Many Cape Girardeau residents said they didn't want to risk not getting gifts to their loved ones in time for Christmas.

"Everyone wants to be able on Christmas morning to be able to have their gifts there for their family and I just want them to be happy," Marcia Stone said.

"We can't always be together but we can at least get something to them, to our loved ones and that's the main thing that way they've got it on Christmas," Betsy VanGennip said.

However, if you didn't go to the nearest shipping service, your gifts can still get there by Christmas but you will likely spend more money the longer you wait.

If you sent a 6-pound package in-state on Monday, it would've cost you anywhere from $6 to $16 depending on if you went to the post office, UPS or FedEx.

The gifts are expected to arrive by mid-week.

However, if you waited until December 23, and still wanted the package to arrive in time for Christmas morning, it would cost you nearly double or more to ship it overnight.

That same 6-pound package would cost between $30 to $40 to ship in-state using either UPS or FedEx.

Residents would not be able to send it from their local post office, though.

The last day to ship there, using priority mail in time for Christmas, is December 20.

If you are an extreme procrastinator, FedEx does offer same day delivery, even on Christmas day.

However, that could cost around $70 or more.

All of these prices depend on where your shipping and how much the package weighs.

Below is the deadlines for sending letters and packages from your local post office:

  • Dec. 20 is last day you can send cards, packages and letters so they get there before Christmas.
  • Dec. 23 is the last day to send packages using Priority Mail Express.
