CARTERVILLE, IL (KFVS) -

December 15 is the last day for people to register for health insurance coverage if they want it to be effective January 1.

Experts state when logging onto the healthcare website, there are a few critical things to know.

"You need to know who in your household needs coverage," Nancy Muzzarelli from Shawnee Health Center, said. "And then you need to have data ready for those individuals, such as birth dates, social security numbers, who's working, where they're working and their income."

One major issue experts say they've seen, are the number of people debating on whether or not to not sign up for a coverage plan at all.

Experts say you may want to reconsider.

The penalty for not having coverage is $95 or 1 percent of your annual income for 2014, whichever price is greater.

"When people file their income tax in the spring of 2015, that's when they'll have to pay that penalty," Muzzarelli said. "Let's say a person earns roughly 30,000 dollars; one percent is 300 dollars."

Health insurance experts say people can still register after Monday, Dec. 15's deadline.

Although your coverage will not take into effect on January first, people that are interested in signing up after Monday's deadline, can enroll up until February 15 to get coverage for 2015.
