MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - A Southern Illinois Fire Department is participating in a holiday program aimed at raising awareness of holiday related fire incidents.

Mt. Vernon Fire Department is participating in the "Keep the Wreath Red" program for a third year.

The department is touting large Christmas wreaths in front of each of its three fire stations.

Each wreath glows with several large red light bulbs -- Each time the department responds to a holiday related fire incident, the fire fighter change one of the bulbs from red to white.

Mt. Vernon Fire Fighter Doug Boczek says its visual representation of the dangers of holiday decorations not properly maintained.

“A lot of times people tend to forget these basic safety things that they wouldn't ever do around their house of running four or five extension cords together out of one outlet, Boczek said. "People wouldn't normally do that but around the holidays they think it's a necessity so they do it so they make sure their Christmas tree is lit”

Since the program began, the department hasn't had to change a single red bulb to white, Bozcek said.

The Mt. Vernon Professional Fire Fighters Local 738 union has several tips on its website on how to approach holiday electrical decorations, candles, and Christmas trees.
