CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A new poll just released shows the majority of Americans now feel it is more important to protect the right to own guns than to place restrictions on firearms.

Fifty two percent of people surveyed said they would rather see more protection for gun rights laws while 46 percent said controlling access to firearms was priority.

Some gun vendors say all the recent controversies surrounding firearms may contribute to how people feel.

"It will give people a little more knowledge combined with the fact the permit to acquire handguns has went away making them far easier to buy,” Norm's Guns, a St. Louis based firearms dealer, seller Stan Tiefenbrun said. “Combined with the conceal carry laws, people are being a little more conscious and want to protect themselves,”

The study was conducted by the Pew Research Center.

Researchers say the survey shows a trend in people's attitudes towards gun control not seen in nearly two decades.
