Santa makes special appearance for children with special needs

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Children with special needs got a chance to meet with Santa in Cape Girardeau, Missouri on Saturday.

That was as part of Easter Seals Disability Services "sensory friendly" event.

Nearly 45 children and their families took part.

Organizers say malls and other places to see Santa can be stressful and uncomfortable for children with special needs like autism.

"It's very non-judgmental if somebody were to get over stimulated we'd be able to handle the behaviors as they come. It's just quieter, not as bright, not as loud," autism director Casey Cyr said.

Other activities for the kids included arts and crafts, cookie decorating, and a present give-a-way.
