Sheriff's Office: Paducah man facing charges after running from authorities

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) -

The McCracken County, Kentucky sheriff's office says a man is facing a number of charges after a traffic stop on Friday.

According to the sheriff's office, the stop happened at the intersection of Hovekamp Road and Yarbro Lane for a seat belt violation.

The deputy making the stop noticed the passenger of the vehicle, Johnny Herring, 34, of Paducah, was acting suspiciously.

The deputy asked to see the man's identification and was given a Kentucky identification card.

The officer noticed the picture on the ID did not match that of the man.

After trying to get more information from the man, the deputy asked the man to step out of the car.

Herring got out the car and immediately began to run, according to the sheriff's office.

The deputy caught up with, and captured Herring after a 300 yard chase through heavy brush and a wooded area.

The sheriff's office says a search of the vehicle resulted in finding drug paraphernalia and a loaded .38 gun.

The gun was found under the passenger seat, where Herring, a convicted felon, had been sitting.

According to the sheriff's office, officers found two small bags of methamphetamine on the man. One bag was in his pants pocket and the other was hidden in his shoe.

McCracken County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Paducah Police and a K-9.

The search resulted in finding methamphetamine and marijuana that Herring had tried to get rid of while running, according to the sheriff's office.

It was later found out that the identification card Herring had produced, actually belonged to a family member..

The family member didn't know Herring was in possession his identification, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office says Herring attempted to use this information to avoid apprehension for several active warrants for his arrest.

Herring was booked into the McCracken County Regional Jail for the following charges:

  • Theft of Identity of another w/o consent
  • Fleeing or Evading Police 2nd Degree
  • Drug Paraphernalia Buy / Posses
  • Possession of Marijuana
  • Possession of Firearm by convicted felon
  • Possession of Controlled Substance 1st Degree, 1st Offense (methamphetamine)
  • Tampering with Physical Evidence
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree
