Investigation ongoing into alleged inappropriate social media messages between teens

CHESTER, IL (KFVS) -

The investigation is ongoing into allegations of inappropriate messages between teens, according to Randolph County States Attorney Jeremy Walker.

On Tuesday, Dec. 16, he said another victim came forward.

Walker said later in the week he'll decide if he will press charges.

The Chester, Illinois Police Department is also investigating the allegations of inappropriate, possibly criminal, communication on social media between teens.

Chester Police say because juveniles are involved and the sensitive nature of the investigation, there is little information they can release.

However, the initial investigation is complete and the department's next step is to submit it to the Randolph County State's Attorney's Office.

But that doesn't mean news of the incident wasn't talked about around town.

"It is a small town, people talk about it. It is just getting more and more blown up. It just needs to stop. I think it is obviously wrong, it is wrong to do anything like that, but this is just unacceptable," says Hunter Cushman.

Linda Stallman says the story is concerning.

"Parents sometimes forget that there are sites that they don't want their kids on, there's people that they don't want their children to (talk to), We have to be as parents and grandparents more diligent and really check and really watch over them," she says.

Police Chief Michael Coffey said the initial investigation is complete and the department's next step is to submit it to the Randolph County State's Attorney's Office.

He said the attorney's office and investigating officers will then meet about the details of the investigation.

"At this time, I cannot speculate as to whether charges will be filed, or to the timeline for which charges may be brought," Chief Coffey said.

According to Chester District 139 Superintendent Chris Diddlebock, the school has a firewall that blocks all access to social media sites.
