Pulaski Co. state's attorney stepping down

The Pulaski County, Illinois state's attorney announced he is stepping down from his post.

Grayson Gile  was first elected to the office in 2000 and served eight years before leaving to serve several tours of duty with the military in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He cited health reasons for stepping down.

Gile said at 59, he doesn't feel he can perform the duties of his office as well as he once did. He felt it was ethically responsible to step down and let someone else serve the people of Pulaski County as he believed they should be served.

Assistant State's Attorney Julian Watkins will take over.

Gile said Watkins is a very capable, young attorney who is from the area and has the best interest of Pulaski County in mind.

The county board has the ultimate decision of who will assume Giles' duties.

Illinois law says it must be someone from the same political party, but the board has yet to vote on officially filling the seat.
