Cape County Jaycees Toybox program needs donations

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Cape County Jaycees have been providing toys to kids in need for years through their Toybox program.

This year, the toybox is a little empty and members say they're running out of time.

An early delivery date and an increase in applications has created a shortage of donations for the Toybox program.

You may see their boxes at Cape Girardeau businesses.

They provide for the more than 400 families who applied for help this Christmas through the Jaycees Toybox program.

As a teacher, co-chair Tracy Haggerty said she sees the need in Cape for this type of project.

She said when students return to school in January talking about what they got for Christmas, it's heartbreaking to watch those kids who didn't get anything and how that makes them feel.

"I know Christmas toys may seem superficial to some people but to these kids it's Christmas, it's everything," said Haggerty. "And so when you have some kids who don't get that at the holidays your heart really breaks for them. Because they're looking at other kids and thinking what did I do wrong? Why was I on the naughty list this year? Why didn't Santa come to my house? And that's what we're about. We're about spreading that joy to every kid regardless of their parent's financial situation."

Haggerty said they did get a substantial donation Wednesday, which put them closer to their mark.

But many of the age groups remain empty, with no toys to distribute for the remaining 150 children.

Presents and gift cards can be dropped off at any of the Toybox donation points or at the Southeast Missourian.

The presents go out for delivery December 18th.
