Southeast Missouri man wondering why brother's grave was covered up

CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS) - A Southeast Missouri man is looking for answers after his brother's headstone is covered up by another grave marker.

James Finley's brother, Billy Finley, was buried at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Charleston in 2007.

"It's bad enough when somebody losses a family member," Finley said.

But now, the foot stone of someone buried from a different family, partially covers and blocks Finley's brother's head marker.

"It's a disrespect to anybody that something like that happened or something like that's going on," Finley said.

Finley says he doesn't begrudge the other family but just wants some answers on why it happened. He says he has been trying to find out for 6 years but has not gotten a straight answer.

KFVS News turned to the cemetery's committee president Glennon Johnson for his take.

"It's just the way the plot lays," said Johnson.

Simply put, the cemetery can not do much.

Johnson explained the other family's foot stone runs right up to the Finley's plot but doesn't cross onto it.

"The foot stone is a little bigger than normal and hides the headstone," said Johnson.

Put in the position of the mediator, Johnson says he is committed to working things out.

"We're going to work with the families to see if we can't work this problem out then," Johnson said.

Until then, Finley's frustration will continue.

“It's just not right," Finley said.
