Southern Illinois policy leaders remember Judy Baar Topinka

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -  Illinois' state comptroller, Judy Baar Topinka has died at the age 70.

Topinka passed away Wednesday morning, after complications of a stroke.

She served as the state comptroller since 2011 and also served as the state's treasurer from 2007 to 2011.

She was the first woman in Illinois to serve in two State Constitutional offices. And she made history again by becoming the first state Treasurer to be re-elected to three consecutive terms.

Policy leaders in Southern Illinois say she was a one of a kind leader.

“ I think she had an impact on trying to do something about the state's financial problem," Paul Simon Public Policy Institute David Yepsen said. "Illinois is in really bad financial shape.”

Leaders from the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute state the current governor will elect someone take Topinka's position until January, when her current term expires next month.

They state due to a new governor coming in, it is unclear how the succession will work after January, when her next term would have started.
