CHICAGO (AP) - Democratic Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn says he's "heartbroken" about the death of Republican state Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka.

Topinka's office says she died early Wednesday after suffering a stroke. Quinn called her "a trailblazer in every sense of the word" and a "force of nature."

Quinn lost his seat in the November general election to Republican Gov.-elect Bruce Rauner. Rauner remembered Topinka's "magnetic, one-of-a-kind personality" and said she only cared "about what was best for the people" of Illinois.

Topinka defeated Democrat Sheila Simon in the November election for another term as comptroller. Simon said Illinoisans will remember Topinka for her dedication to public service and larger-than-life personality.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White called Topinka a "straight shooter who served Illinois with dignity."
