CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Cape Girardeau, Missouri public school children received 1,200 sock hats on Tuesday.

It's the latest organization to benefit from the generosity of the residents at Capetown Assisted and Independent Living Centers.

The residents there have been working on the hats since April 2014.

The yarn came from a local donor, and the residents used a hat loom to do the rest.

Megan Steimlee, an independent living coordinator talked about the effort that went into the gifts.

"It's a warm hat. It keeps their ears warm,” Steimlee said. “It's the gift of giving, and continuing to be um, everyone's an individual so each hat is an individual hat.”

"If we go outside, I don't have to like wear, like, another regular hat that's like all pink and stuff,” Lakera McCray, a 2nd grader, said.

In the past, the living center has donated hats to Wounded Warriors, Mizzou college students, and even a mission in Russia.
