Lost hunter in rural Ava, IL found after becoming disoriented

AVA, IL (KFVS) -

A reported lost hunter was found in rural Ava, Illinois on Dec. 6.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, around 6:03 p.m. a possible lost hunter was reported to them at the end of Possum Road off of Lone Oak Road.

Deputies responded to the area along with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

They found the reporting party who told them his friend, later identified as James F. Letherman, was hunting in a wooded area at the end of Possum Road. He was last seen around 2 p.m. in his ground blind.

At around 4:30 p.m., the reporting party said they checked on Leatherman but was unable to found him in or around the blind.

The sheriff's office K9, several deputies and IDNR searched the area on foot.

Members of the Campbell Hill Fire Department, Ava Fire Department and Gorham Fire Department helped in the search on foot, as well as by ATV.

Around 9:43 p.m., deputies say Leatherman was found in a wooded area off of Possum Road.

He told them he was disoriented after leaving the blind on foot after dark.

He said while trying to find his way back to the road, he became too tired to continue.

Leatherman was evaluated by the Jackson County Ambulance Service on scene and declined being taken to the hospital for further treatment.
