Illinois shop owners make the best of the holiday season

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Every dollar spent at a local business will re-circulate at least seven times, which is why mom and pop stores count on customer loyalty to help kick start holiday season.

With less than three weeks left in the holiday shopping season, stores in Carbondale, Illinois are using every opportunity to make the most of it.

Despite catchy themes and some discounts to attract shoppers, the holiday shopping season is off to a slow start for some store owners.

"I'm hoping that it will pick up, and it will," Chris Mckinley said.

Mckinley owns Dayshift in Carbondale, and says sales have been better.

"We have such an eclectic collection of things that we are kind of competing with a lot of different stores," Mckinley said..

Her shop is filled with handmade products from more than 60 local artists.

Aside from the unique gift ideas, Mckinley says it's the customer service she offers that can't be found in big box stores.

The same business practice is used inside the Tickled Pink Boutique.

"We offer refreshments and we offer wrapping, and we try to get people to sign up for the wish list," Kelly Thornburg, owner of the boutique, said.

Foot traffic inside Kelly Thornburg's store is the result of personalized customer service and starting the holiday sales early.

"We are busier than normal. We have a lot of people that are trying to shop a little bit earlier, which I was surprised,” Thornburg said.

The Carbondale Chamber of Commerce is also offering an incentive to shoppers who shop locally.
