Police warn of strong arm robberies in Cape Girardeau County

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Three strong arm robberies in Cape Girardeau County within five days.

Police say it's an unfortunate reality that tends to happen this time of year.

They say the criminals are motivated by money and merchandise, things we're more likely to have on us this time of year.

These strong arm robberies have typically been at night.

For that reason, authorities say it's important to stay in well lit areas.

"Sometimes we see an influx of thefts and burglaries because people have more items, more money, more stuff on them," said Cape Girardeau police officer Darin Hickey.

Over the course of a week, two strong arm robberies were reported in Cape Girardeau and one in Jackson.

Police believe the motivation is money.

Cape Girardeau police officer Darin Hickey said during the biggest shopping season of the year thieves look for ways to strike.

"You've got you head down in the trunk and you leave your purse in a cart or on the ground. It's very, very easy for somebody to walk by and grab that purse, reach in and grab something out of the car and it can be gone just that quick," said officer Hickey.

That scenario played out on Wednesday night in Cape Girardeau when a woman had her purse stolen while she was in her car.

But there are ways to protect yourself.

Officer Hickey said it's important to put any items in your trunk instead of a backseat where they're visible.

He also recommends telling someone else where you plan to go and how long you'll be gone.

"I think anybody unfortunately can be a victim and we all have to do our part to watch out for our neighbor and watch out for our loved ones but we have to make ourselves a hard target, we have to make ourselves a hard victim," Officer Hickey said.

Officer Hickey added no present or amount of money is worth your life.
