WEST FRANKFORT, IL (KFVS) - With the peak of flu season, nurses are advising students to take extra care during this time of year.

Amy Harkins, a nurse at Central High school, said although there hasn't been any positive tests for the flu, she has seen many students coming in recently with stomach viruses, sore throats and allergies due to the weather changes.

Harkins said one of the best ways to prevent the common cold during this time of year is a pretty simple process.

“Washing your hands,” she said. “A lot of the kids that are coughing, even adults, are coughing, sneezing, and you're getting all those germs on your hands and the best way to break that spread is by hand washing.”

Nurse Harkins said this is the best way to break the chain of infection.

Nurses also recommend proper nutrition, a good night's sleep, and if someone does need to cough or sneeze, to do so in your sleeve, rather than your hands.
