MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

Mississippi County Sheriff Keith Moore is warning area residents of two phone "scams."

Sheriff Moore said one caller claims to be a U.S. Treasury agent looking to collect "back taxes" and the other falsely claims to be an employee of the Social Security Administration looking to recover over payments made to Social Security recipients.

He said both callers have threatened residents with legal action if they refuse to provide their personal and banking account information.

The reported calls came from the 732 and 636 area codes.

Residents are encouraged to discuss these scams with their friends and family members to ensure their loved ones don't fall prey to the callers.

Sheriff Moore reminds residents that real government agencies will never threaten or intimidate citizens into providing personal or financial information over the telephone.

He said if you receive a suspicious call, hang up and contact law enforcement.
