Marion, IL gun range sees sharp increase of women buying guns

. .
MARION, IL (KFVS) -

At the Tombstone gun range and training center in Marion,Illinois, gun sales are on the rise, but not just with men.

Owners say they've seen a large increase in the number of women buying guns.

At the range, concealed carry classes are offered for the basic use of a hand gun.

Women usually make up about 20 to 30 percent of those classes.

Owner J.D. Barter says he was surprised when he noticed a sharp increase in the amount of women taking the classes.

"I was just making our next schedule up for January,” Barter said. “I've actually had to schedule two women's only basic hand gun courses to help meet that need."

Barter says he believes more women are buying guns for independence, and not needing to rely on someone else.

Owners stated that they have seen a high number of gun sales within the past several years, and say they expect that number will continue to rise in the future.
