CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - If you're looking for a way to give back, this might be something you can support.

The Carbondale, "I Can Read!" program is in need of new books, cash donations and volunteers.

The program has been operating for more than 16 years, helping thousands of kids learn to read and write and really develop a love of reading in and around Carbondale.

This year, Morris Library at SIUC is hosting a drive to help out with these needs.

“Kids go to school to learn how to read but there is only so much that a teacher can do in a classroom and I just think it is very important to learn how to read and enjoy books outside of school,” says Linda Porter-Smith.

A book request is on the back of the bookmark.

You can buy the book and return it to the library.

If you do not want to buy a book, cash donations are also being accepted.

Organizers say they're always collecting books, but ask that donations be brought in before Dec. 17.
