Herrin, IL high school to receive $25,000 grant

HERRIN, IL (KFVS) -

Herrin High School will get $25,000 to help students learn driving safely.

The nationwide contest, Celebrate my Drive, celebrates new drivers making smart driving choices, like buckling up and avoiding distractions.

Schools, churches and the community signed up, which increased the chances of receiving the grant.

The more comments the school received, the better the chances of receiving the award.

Principal Terry Ryker said the students couldn't do it alone.

"The churches in town, the banks in town and the restaurants, everybody was handing out the flyers to get online and it worked," said Principal Ryker. "And when a community works together, when you live in a small community, you can do those things. You really can."

The high school is one of 90 across the country that received the award.

Ten percent of the grant is mandated for safe driving programs at the school.
