City of Sikeston buys part of Union Pacific Railroad corridor

. .

The Sikeston City Council announced the purchase of the Union Pacific Railroad corridor on Tuesday, Dec. 2.

The corridor is located adjacent to Malone Avenue and extending from County Road BB to County Road 541 (St. George Lane).

"Our community will benefit from this acquisition," said Mayor Jerry Pullen. "It gives us an opportunity to clean up and beautify Malone Avenue, provides space for a future recreational trail and facilitates improvements to Malone Avenue, such as the eventual construction of a center turn lane."

City Manager Jonathan "J.D." Douglass explained that no tax dollars were used.

"Funds for this $315, 687 purchase are coming from the city's economic development fund, which contains proceeds from property sales and leases," Douglass said.

By getting the property, the city will also manage several leases of portions of the property. The leases, estimated to generate about $43,000 annually, will cover the corridor's maintenance costs, reimburse the city's economic development fund and provide funding for future improvements to the property.

"When the time comes to convert the property to a public use, such as a recreational trail, the planning of the project will be open and public process," Pullen said.

Funding for the project came from various grant programs offered by government and not-for-profit agencies.

Private sponsorships for development of the trail and features such as benches and landscapes will also be accepted.
