CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Police in Cape Girardeau, Missouri say an assault investigation is underway on Tuesday, Dec. 2.

Officers were called to a Cape Girardeau hospital on Sunday night where a couple was being treated.

They say the couple told them they were walking along the river front around 8:50 when a group of four young women and one older teenager approached them.

The couple said one of the girls walked up to the woman and asked her a question, then the other three women allegedly came from behind.

They allegedly pulled the female victim to the ground and began assaulting her.

According to the couple, that's when the male victim stepped in to try and stop it. They say he was allegedly assaulted by the male suspect, then the female suspects allegedly took the female victim's purse.

Police say the group was last seen running north from the river front.

They say the alleged attack happened on the river side of the river wall.

Police do not believe this has any connection to any of the recent robberies.
