MO couple accused of assault over FB posts

BENTON, MO (KFVS) -

Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter says a man and woman were taken into custody for charges related to an assault stemming from Facebook posts made.

Thomas J. Sheppard III, 22, of Cape Girardeau, Missouri was charged with second degree assault and property damage.

Sarah B. Cook, 26, of Sikeston, Missouri, was charged with second degree assault.

Sheriff Walter says the sheriff's office responded to the Oran Library for an assault investigation on Friday.

A person reported he had been assaulted by Sheppard and Cook.

According to the victim, a verbal altercation occurred between him and Cook regarding alleged posts on Facebook.

According to the sheriff's office, the victim said Sheppard attacked the victim by hitting him a number of times and kicking him.

The victim said that Sheppard pushed him against a pillar on the porch of the library, separating the pillar from the building.

The victim stated that he was on the ground and that Sheppard got on top of him and struck hit him several more times.

The victim said while he was on the ground, Cook stomped on his head several times, according to the sheriff's office.

A deputy saw bruising across the entire right side of the victim's forehead and red marks on his nose.

The couple's vehicle was found and stopped on Kingshighway at Salcedo Road in Sikeston.

Sheppard and Cook were taken to the Scott County Jail.

Sheppard's bond was set by the court at $2,500 cash only.

Cook's bond was set by the court at $5,000 cash or surety.
