HERRIN, IL (KFVS) -

At Wiswell's Christmas tree farm, people are getting ready to pick out a tree for the holiday.

“I'm very excited to get a Christmas tree, this is our first time out here,” Cassie Lightner, of Ridgway said.

Families get on a tractor and set off to find that one tree they're looking for.

“We're really wanting a soft pine Christmas tree, and I'm hoping that they have one big enough,” Lightner said.

But after you pick the one, what happens next?

Eighteen years in the business, owners of Wiswell's say if someone buys a live tree on a rainy day, leave it in a sheltered area, outside house for a few day.

This is to make sure the tree gets dry and that way, family members will not get sick.

“Also, keep your trees away from your heater,” Wiswell's Haleigh Holloway said.

“Always check and make sure that there is water in the bottom of the Christmas tree, and turn your lights off before you go to sleep every night,” Holloway said.

Tree business owners say live trees will last about a month and a half. For more tips on tree maintenance, click here.
