10 southern Illinois chambers' of commerce pledge to shop local

MARION, IL (KFVS) - November 29 is "Shop Local Saturday" and that has 10 area Chambers' of Commerce encouraging their communities to shop local in Southern Illinois.

The Carbondale, Murphysboro, Marion, Herrin, Carterville, Union County, Pinckneyville, West Frankfort, Du Quoin, and Benton-West City Chambers' of Commerce have joined together to support local businesses.

The Chambers' have rolled out a website, www.ShopSouthernIllinois.com, where you can take a pledge to shop local.

From supporting you neighbors to creating uniqueness, the website lists six reasons why the community should shop local.

The manager of Joes Record Store, Josh Stockinger, in the Illinois Star Centre Mall in Marion says with online shopping being so popular, local business has become more competitive.

"The fact that we're even here and people come in to support us is a great thing," Stockinger said.  “If you want there to be local retailers, you have to come out and support us. And likewise we try to take care of our customers too.”

James Martie, of Dowell, says he plans to do his holiday shopping at local businesses.

“Instead of making some fat cat in New York rich, I'd rather put money in the pockets of people around here," Marite said.

Wesley's Custom Graphics in Marion is working with the area chambers' to support local business. He has made “Shop Southern Illinois” stickers and is giving them away for free.

If you'd like to pick up a sticker, you can get it at  208 West DeYoung Street in Marion.
