Beefing up retail security before Black Friday

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - A lot of traditions accompany the Thanksgiving holiday.

Every year right around this time we give thanks, but a new tradition has millions of Americans packing up, heading out and shopping til they drop.

Cities and businesses are preparing for the influx of shoppers.

Often associated with those crazy good deals, are crazy videos documenting customers fighting for what's on their gift list.

Police and businesses are working together to prevent those violent interactions.

For anyone out on Thursday night or Black Friday trying to find a deal, you'll probably find some officers.

More patrols will be out to control traffic and crowds.

Many businesses have security protocol in place to make sure it's a smooth experience.

Cape Girardeau Police Officer Darin Hickey said they haven't seen any major problems in the past and want to keep it that way.

"We've had really good success of officers walking through businesses, speaking to managers, let these businesses know that we are here, we're out there, we have officers on duty to help out with any problems you may have," said Officer Hickey. "So our businesses are really receptive to that and they don't hesitate to let us know if there is any issue."

Some stores have hired extra security for the days ahead.

And several businesses said they do have security protocol in place, though they wouldn't give specifics.
