Students color pictures to inspire those battling cancer

BELL CITY, MO (KFVS) - Coloring to inspire, that's what some Heartland elementary students are doing to help those battling cancer.

It all started after one of their teachers received her cancer diagnosis.

Rhonda Painton is doing much better and is back teaching at Bell City Elementary. It was while she was receiving treatments, she got a picture during every treatment, colored by students, that left an impression on her.

It meant her so much that when she got back to school, she wanted to have her students do the same.

That's exactly what happened. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade started coloring and drawing pictures that were then sent to the Southeast Hospital cancer center for the patients.

Painton said the simple idea and grown to the point that it every time she drops of the pictures, her stack seems to get bigger.

"It doesn't matter what you do. It's the little things," Painton said. "A simple thing like a smile, a thank you or a coloring page saying I care and you will brighten someone's life."

Painton said coloring pages have also helped explain cancer to the students. They understand that the pictures bring a smile to someone who needs it.
