CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Social media users may have seen it all: the good, the bad and sometimes ugly comments posted online.

With news being easily accessible on computers, tablets and smart phones, it's pretty simple to go straight to social media and see a variety of opinions.

Some people say those comments can potentially affect others.

"If you're going through social media and your news feeds and you see all this hate, you're going to be thinking, 'well all of these people think that way, I need to think that way,'" SIU student Lacey Kelley said.

Other students say social media has a strong impact on people's opinions.

“Media amplifies the way that we think and we follow the things that are on social media," SIU Brittany Robinson said. "So it's a vicious cycle if there are negative things in there."

“It definitely has an impact on public perception of events that are going on, some even more than the major news outlets," graduate student Wesley Petty said.

Some say even liking a post or retweeting something can sometimes show you agree.

Studies show that 68 percent of millennial get their news from social media, but 66 percent don't believe the news they receive is accurate.
