Anxiety, excitement as Cape Central football team heads north for semi-finals

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Anxiety meets excitement for the Cape Central football team.

They're headed to the St. Louis area to take on St. Charles in the state semi-finals.

The game starts at 7 p.m.

Cape Central principal, Dr. Mike Cowan, said the enthusiasm outweighs any fears.

The team loaded the bus as scheduled at 2:15 p.m. Plenty of parents, students and staff say they plan to travel to the area to support them.

However, other moms, dads and students also say they have fears and chose not to go because or potential violence nearby.

Cowan said he understands, and staff and coaches have stayed informed and prepared.

"We have taken appropriate cautionary measures to make sure everything is as normal as it can be in the greater St. Louis area," Cowan said. "We want people to understand if they're not from St. Louis, they're a long way from Ferguson, they're a long way from Clayton, where there have been some protests."

Cowan said they are going about Friday night football business as usual, other than, of course, they're playing in the final four.
