McCracken Co. sheriff's office warns of phone scam

The McCracken County Sheriff's Department is warning residents about a phone scam.

Someone called the sheriff's office saying they had fell victim to an attempted scam.

According to the victims, the caller had a “foreign accent” and told them due to their payment history on their “Visa” credit card they were now eligible for a reduced interest rate.

The scammer then asked for the victim to “confirm” their credit card number, followed by requesting their “bank account” number.

When the victims refused to provide their banking account information, the scammer remained persistent and tried to convince the victim that the number is “printed on their checks” in an attempt to minimize the importance to keep the number confidential.

The phone call was made from 516-333-3803.

The sheriff's office says not to provide any information to any call received like this one.

Authorities say it is common for these scammers to rotate numbers.
