IL Lt. Gov. Simon supports first responders at rural EMS Summit

SPRINGFIELD, IL (KFVS) -

Illinois Lt. Governor Sheila Simon supported first responders in rural areas at the second annual Illinois EMS Summit on Wednesday.

According to a news release, the gathering of emergency medical professionals and other stakeholders promotes conversation between rural ambulance agencies that struggle to provide lifesaving service in rural areas of Illinois.

“A heart attack or stroke is just as urgent in Cairo or Salem as it is in Chicago or Rockford, but ambulance services in rural areas are facing different challenges,” Simon said. “They serve fewer people over wider areas, and face the same rising costs to provide cutting edge care. I hope this summit continues to help EMS providers and local stakeholders work together to provide lifesaving care to their communities.”

Simon's office was among the organizations that formed the first Illinois EMS Summit. The first summit was in 2013.

Participants at this year's summit examined the condition of rural EMS and reviewed the progress made by the General Assembly's EMS Task Force.

Other co-sponsors included the Illinois Farm Bureau, Illinois Department of Public Health, the American Heart Association, and the Illinois State Ambulance Association.
