Williamson Co. sheriff warns of phone scam

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

Williamson County Sheriff Bennie Vick is warning of a phone scam happening in the area.

Vick says several people have reported getting scam calls on their cell phones in the past week.

The scam involves someone calling from what appears to be Washington, D.C. People who have answered these calls say someone with a foreign accent says they have been approved for a federal grant worth $9,000. The caller says they need checking account information to deposit the money.

The calls have reportedly come from both men and women.

Vick says you should never give personal information to people over the phone. He also says these types of calls may increase as the holidays get closer.
