CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Black Friday sales are starting earlier and earlier.

RetailMeNot reports 1 in 5 Black Friday shoppers say they will shop on Thanksgiving Day this year.

Others will stay home, but still use the day to research Black Friday deals.

With big box stores opening so early, you would think it might negatively impact local stores.

However, people like Charles Bert rand, owner of Spanish Street Mercantile, said it is like comparing apples to oranges.

"We just don't have a big one day of the year or two days of the year or big Christmas rush or big Thanksgiving rush or anything," Bertrand said. "We don't do that. It's just steady all year around."

He said shoppers don't come downtown because they are looking for that big sale or that adrenaline rush you might get running through the doors at 5 a.m.

"With the downtown and with the antique shops and with the mom and pop shops, the little gift shops and everything, we aren't competing with them as far as price or product really," Bertrand said.

Callie Mouser works for Philanthropy.

She said they still see a ton of business on Black Friday.

"We are very busy," Mouser said. It's one of the busiest days of the year by far."

Mouser said people come into Philanthropy during this season for a unique reason.

"We have things that you can't find in those types of stores and so we serve a special market for the community here in that you can come and buy things that you wouldn't be able to find anywhere else," she said.

RetailMeNot reports about 21 percent of shoppers say they have never missed a year of Black Friday activities.
