HERRIN, IL (KFVS) - Teens Making a Difference Community Youth Center is selling tickets in Herrin for its first annual Thanksgiving barbecue dinner.

Leaders say the money raised will go towards operating expenses and will also provide dinners for 130 residents in homeless shelters in Herrin, Carbondale and Marion.

Director Emily Cole says this is one of many events that allows kids to play a part in solving issues going on around the are.

“We take the kids out in the community and have them identify key issues,” Cole said. “We have them come to a solution, not only identify it but but help them come to the conclusion of how to solve this problem.”

Students taking part say these dinners will help many people in those communities.

“That's just the best thing to help somebody to do," student Gavin Yates said, about giving dinner to those in need.

Organizers say they hope to reach their goal and feed 170 residents in the homeless shelters.

The Thanksgiving dinner is Thursday, Nov. 20 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Herrin Teen Town, 105 N. 13th St.
