Demolition work began on Monday morning on apartments on the 900 block of East Walnut Street in Carbondale.

City Officials say the apartments have been vacant since this summer.

The apartments will be turned into the Heartland's Women's Clinic, which also has a location in Marion.

A few retail facilities will also be in the new complex.

City officials say this renovation will open up new jobs in the area and residents say they're excited.

"The way I see it is that if it's going to provide jobs for those that live here and may want to come here to work, I think it's an excellent idea," Carbondale resident, Jairus Ruff said. "It's a good start."

City officials say the new complex is expected to open in the summer or fall of 2015.
