ULLIN, IL (KFVS) -

Hundreds of volunteers gathered at Shawnee Community College in Ullin, Illinois to help those who go hungry in southern Illinois.

The goal was 50,000 meals. However, volunteers packed a whopping 53,500 or so meals.

4-H groups from the southern five counties of Illinois joined efforts with the University of Illinois Extension to package meals for the hungry in the southern most counties of Illinois which include Alexander, Johnson, Massac, Pulaski and Union Counties.

U of I Extension Educator Kristi Stout says the need for those in these five counties is a lot.

Organizers say one in five children in the southern Illinois region go hungry, and these meals will help offset that number.

The meals were packaged and sorted in boxes, ready to deliver to the food pantries in the southern five counties.

Children there said they were amazed that there are so many here that go hungry.

Stout says it's also important we teach these young children the value of giving.
