Denise Brown, Carruthers Elementary teacher, receives state-wide recognition for her teaching methods.

While in the classroom, Brown used cans of green beans on Thursday to teach her students about multiplying fractions.

“It just opens up a whole new world to make it hands on because they connect the learning that way, they connect it to something meaningful,” Brown said. “When we teach things out of the context without meaning, guess what, we don't remember it.”

And the students say they enjoy her teaching. “She's nice and fun,” her 5th graders said.

Earlier last month, Brown received the elementary mathematics education award.

She and seven other award recipients were recognized by the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Brown was the only Southern Illinois teacher to receive the state-wide award.

Brown says the love she has for teaching goes beyond words. “It's the best thing I could be doing with my life…it truly is,” she said.

Seeing the children grow and become independent in learning is something Brown says she's always excited to see.

“I can't say anything better about teaching than that,” Brown said.

Brown says she is grateful for her students, past and present, and will be teaching for years to come.
