Casino uses old cells phones for soldiers

A casino says used cell phones are making a difference in the lives of many soldiers, veterans and military families.

According to a news release, Lady Luck Casino in Caruthersville, Missouri became an official drop off site in November of 2011.

The phones will be recycled and the money from the recycling pays for phone minute calling cards that are given to U.S. troops.

The latest shipment puts the casino at 80,000 minutes of free talk time generated for soldiers since becoming a drop off site, according to Lady Luck.

Cell Phones for Soldiers is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing cost-free communication services to active duty military members and veterans.

“It's amazing how such a simple gesture such as donating your outdated phone can have a profound effect. A soldier far from home being able to communicate with his or her family is the least we can do to thank them for their service and commitment to our great nation,” said general manager, Todd Connelly. “With the introduction of new cell phones all the time, I anticipate even more outdated phones being dropped off. We'll continue receiving the old phones until people stop donating them.”
