HERRIN, IL (KFVS) -

The mayor of Herrin has resigned effective immediately due to health complications.

Victor M. Ritter submitted his letter of resignation to the city at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday citing health reasons.

Ritter says his resignation will serve the citizens of Herrin and his family better than if he tried to continue serving as mayor.

He also said that resigning as mayor was one of the most difficult decisions he has ever made.

Ritter has served as mayor since 1999.

Read Ritter's letter of resignation below.

"It is with great sadness that due to health complications, I must resign my position as Mayor of the City of Herrin effective immediately. I have spent a significant amount of time discussing this decision with my family and I have come to the conclusion that my resignation will serve both my family and the Citizens of the great City of Herrin better than should I attempt to continue serving as Mayor. Being the Mayor of Herrin can be both physically and mentally demanding, and the position must be held by someone willing and able to give 100 percent each and every day for the betterment of Herrin and our great People.

Resigning as Mayor is one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made, but I trust that the City Council will continue to lead the City well and select from the Council an acting Mayor to serve until the next Mayor is chosen by the People. Serving as your Mayor has been one of the great honors of my life and I will always treasure my time working for the People of Herrin. My only advice for my successor would be that in all you do as Mayor, you be guided by a simple principle: Do what you believe is best for all of the People of Herrin.

I wish you nothing but wisdom and good fortune as you continue leading the best community in Southern Illinois."
