MARION, IL (KFVS) -

With colder temperatures this week, area homeless shelters are preparing to make sure there's help for those without regular roofs over their heads.

It's during this time of year when folks need it most.

You might notice a theme at the Lighthouse Shelter in Marion, Ill.

"It symbolizes a beacon of hope," says Executive Director Sharon Atchison.

Hope was what Larry Mendall found.

"Being able to come home and having a place to stay means a very lot," says Mendall.

Without it, he says he doesn't know where he would be.

"It is very tough without a place like this that you can come and say, 'hey, I need shelter for the night,'” he says.

Executive Director Sharon Atchison says they're not at capacity, yet.

"Right now we have 28 people here," says Atchison.

She says that could change as quickly as the weather, but the need is always there.

"It's a year round constant need," says Atchison.

At the Lighthouse Shelter in Marion, there's room for up to 45 beds.

They're ready at a moment's notice in case they need to house a larger number than usual.

"Our goal is to see everyone in their own home that can and wants their own home," she says.

Because without a temporary home, Mendall says he wouldn't be able to find a permanent one.

"It gives you more of a sense of life, willingness to work and a go in life with what you really want to do," says Mendall.
