Oran students salute veterans

From letters to artwork, Oran students put on a huge display to honor veterans.

Dozens of area veterans from all wars and current service members attended the assembly with quite a display.

"It's something we've been doing for seven years now," said teacher, Tammy Gaines.

It took weeks of work and hours of set up time to arrange this salute to veterans with war time artifacts and fresh artwork and letters.

Art teacher, Jeff Pind, worked for weeks with students on their art projects.

Meanwhile a huge collection of war-time artifacts was put together as a display in tribute. Much of this collection comes from Pind's personal mementos of his own family members who served and others he's collected over the years.

Meanwhile, teachers had students write letters in class.

"I wrote a letter to my papa," said sixth grader, Waylon Walloonffer. "Papa, you're my hero. I try to image what you went through in Vietnam but I know it doesn't come close. You are near and dear to my heart and I want to thank you."

Mallory Lowes had this to say: "They served time and spent time away from their families so we could be safe, That means a lot."

"I honor them," said junior, Ashlyn McIntosh.

"It puts them back in their situation and let's you feel what they felt," said junior, Tanner McVay.

About 50 veterans attended the service.
