Volunteers to line Carbondale's Main Street with Stars & Stripes

The Stars and Stripes will fly proudly over Carbondale's Main Street this Veterans Day.

Volunteers will place 29 flags along both sides of a one-block stretch of Main Street from Washington Street to Illinois Avenue.

This is the first time these flags will be flown. The flags were donated by the Woodmen of the World group, the Carbondale Lions Club donated the flag poles, and City of Carbondale crews installed underground inserts along the sidewalk to hold the flags in place.

Volunteers will put the flags in place at 8 a.m. Veterans Day and remove them in the afternoon.

The plan is to fly the Main Street flags on every patriotic holiday from here on out: Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day.

The location of the flags are near Veterans Plaza, a small park on the southwest corner of Main and Washington that will host the Veterans of Foreign Wars Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Veterans Day.
