Should the state shut down a no-kill animal shelter in Cape Girardeau County? It's a story that has people fired up on both sides. Crystal Britt will have more on this story, coming up on Heartland News at 10.

Officials in Graves County have canceled a Golden Alert for a 58-year-old Paducah man who was missing on Wednesday. Police say Dwain McGee was found in Paducah.

Two Southern Illinois University football players are off the team, according to school officials. Police say they charged the resident of an apartment, Victor Burnett, after they found more than 450 grams of cannabis and drug paraphernalia in the home while responding to a report of burglary. Burnett is a linebacker on the SIUC team.

A Union County woman accused of killing her boyfriend's 4-year-old son in December 2011 was found not guilty in a directed verdict on Thursday. A judge issued a directed verdict, meaning the defendant's lawyer asked for a motion to dismiss the charges.

Many Missouri counties are declining to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples a day after a judge in St. Louis ruled that the state's ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional. Cape Girardeau County is not accepting same sex marriage licenses due to Missouri Law. The judge's ruling to allow gay marriage is only effective in St. Louis circuit where he has jurisdiction.

A federal appeals court on Thursday upheld anti-gay marriage laws in four states, breaking ranks with other courts that have considered the issue and setting up the prospect of Supreme Court review.
