Southern Illinois man dies in head on crash

HAMILTON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

State police say a Dahlgren, Illinois man has died after a head on crash Tuesday evening in southern Illinois.

It happened around 5:10 p.m. Tuesday on Illinois Route 142, about 1/2 mile south of the Hamilton/Jefferson County Line in Hamilton County, Illinois.

According to the preliminary state police traffic crash investigative details, Joshua D. Jones, 23, of Mt. Vernon, was northbound on Illinois Route when he crossed the center line and hit a vehicle head-on driven by 69-year-old Ralph W. Erwin of Dahlgren.

After Jones' vehicle hit Erwin's vehicle, it continued northbound and hit another vehicle.

Ralph W. Erwin was pronounced deceased at the traffic crash scene by the Hamilton County Coroner's Office.

Joshua D. Jones was transported to an area hospital for injuries sustained in the traffic crash.

The driver of the third vehicle was not injured.

ISP says charges are pending.

The cause remains under investigation.

Both lanes of Route 142 were closed for about four hours.

An ISP Crash Reconstruction Officer (C.R.O.) has been assigned to the crash investigation. In addition, ISP District 19 was assisted at the crash scene by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department, McLeansboro Police Department, Hamilton County EMA, Hamilton County Coroner's Office, Dahlgren Fire Department, Harre Ambulance Service and Litton Ambulance Service.
