Woman facing DUI charges after car crashes, catches fire

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office says a woman and four children were able to get out of a car after it crashed and caught fire on Saturday, Nov. 1.

Tiffani Jo Smith, 28, of Murphysboro was charged with improper lane usage and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Deputies say further charges are pending for endangering the life/health of a child.

According to the sheriff's office, around 9:54 p.m. on Saturday they received a report of a crash on Marlboro Road, just north of Ava Road.

They say it was reported that a vehicle went off the road, into a field and was on fire.

Everyone in the vehicle was able to get out of the vehicle before the fire.

Deputies responded to the scene and found a 2014 Dodge Caravan just off the road in a cut corn field, and on fire.

They say the preliminary investigation shows that the van had ran off the road and into the field. They say there was no evidence to suggest that it had hit any other objects or rolled over at any time.

Deputies say the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Smith was arrested at the scene and taken to a hospital. She was later released.

According to the sheriff's office, there were four children under the age of nine years in the van at the time of the crash.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Ava Fire Department.

The incident was also reported to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
