DU QUOIN, IL (KFVS) -

Du Quoin, Illinois has seen it's fair share of crumbling buildings downtown. But, some hope a newly restored building will rebuild the downtown area to what once was a considered a hopping place.

St. Nicholas Brewing Company had a grand opening ribbon cutting for their pub on Saturday. This brewery/restaurant was originally built in 1879 as the main hotel in downtown Du Quoin.

Owner Abby Ancell says this has been nearly five years restoring this building into what it is today.

"We got to this building just in time," she said. "Another year or so and it would have been to old and run down to restore."

Customers filled the brewery like it was back in the late 1800's when the hotel was filled with visitors.

Some on Saturday said that it is great to see buildings like this being restored downtown instead of seeing another building partially collapse.

Patricia Gross of Cobden says Du Quoin needs more restored buildings like this to encourage more people to come here and shop.

"Already we have seen some recent growth downtown here and I have seen more people come to this area and shop due to more businesses opening up," Gross said.

Others said the downtown area is now something for people to be proud of again.
