Heartland bluegrass concert to raise money for Zalma organization

Zalma Masonic Lodge is hosting the 5th Annual Castor River Bluegrass Bash on Saturday, Nov. 1 starting at 10 a.m. at the Zalma High School gym.

Event organizer Leevon DeCourley says not only will the concert raise money for good causes in the community, but also bring top-notch bluegrass music to the area.

The headliner is David Davis and the Warrior River Boys.

According to DeCourley, Davis has been performing his traditional bluegrass music for 30 years in the United States and Canada.

“Just the music in general is pretty exciting,” DeCourley said. “We have six different bands. Each will play a little bit different style of bluegrass. [It's] a wholesome, family environment with great music, fellowship, some good food, and there's usually even some dancing.”

DeCourley says also included in the line-up is The Floyd's Fork Ramblers, from East Tennessee and Central Kentucky. He says many of the members regularly perform on RFD-TV's Cumberland Highlanders show.

Other bands include the Men of the Week, Open Range, Janie Brown and the Chestnut Mountain Gang, and 545 Traveling Men.

Tickets for the concert cost $12 for adults and $5 for children ages seven to 16. Children six and under are free. Concessions are available for purchase.

“We try to keep our prices affordable so you can bring out the whole family,” DeCourley said.

DeCourley says lodge members use the money raised for charitable projects in the community.

“We have partnered with Zalma Schools on different things,” DeCourley said. “Most recently, it has been a program where we send food home with underprivileged children so they have food over the weekends. The newest thing we are currently working on is a scholarship.”
