IDOT, law enforcement stepping up patrols Halloween weekend

SPRINGFIELD, IL (KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Illinois State Police (ISP) will be increasing patrols on Halloween weekend in order to decrease motor vehicle crashes.

According to data from IDOT, during the last five years on Halloween night, four out of 19 death or 22 percent were due to drunk driving.

Some tips for having a safe and fun Halloween include: planning a safe way home ahead of the festivities, designating a sober driver, calling a taxi, family member, a friend, or a local sober ride program, alerting law enforcement of intoxicated drivers, and taking the car keys of someone about to drive impaired.

As of October 29, 2014, Illinois motor vehicle death were at 763, which is 86 lower compared to the same timeframe last year.
